MY PARENTS HANDED THE FAMILY COMPANY TO MY SISTER AFTER I WORKED FOR YEARS FOR FREE. SO I WALKED AWAY. A WEEK LATER, MY FATHER CALLED BEGGING ME TO SAVE THEIR BIGGEST CLIENT…
I stood by the office door, watching my father and sister scramble through the paperwork I had organized meticulously for years. Despite my decade of unpaid labor and loyalty, they had just announced that Vanessa, who had never spent a full day in the warehouse, was the new CEO. My father didn’t look me in the eye when he said they needed a “fresh, modern face” for the brand.
“You’re making a mistake,” I said quietly, clutching my bag. “Vanessa doesn’t know the client contracts, and she certainly doesn’t know how to navigate the upcoming audit.”
“Don’t be dramatic,” Vanessa snapped, already picking up the phone. “It’s a family company. You should be happy I’m taking the stress off your hands. Now, could you be a dear and leave your office keys on the desk?”
I did more than that. I walked away from the building, deleted my proprietary logistics software—which I owned personally—and blocked their numbers.
Exactly seven days later, my father’s name flashed on my screen from a burner phone. I answered, listening to the sound of pure panic on the other end.
“Elena, you have to come back,” he pleaded, his voice cracking. “Our biggest client, the Sterling Group, just pulled their account. They said they only deal with people who actually know their business. Vanessa tried to fake her way through the meeting and accidentally insulted their chairman. We’re losing everything.”
I sat on my new balcony, looking out at the city. “I’m sure the ‘fresh, modern face’ of the company can handle it, Dad.”
“She can’t! They’ve frozen our credit lines!” he shouted. “Please, save us. Tell them whatever they want to hear.”
“I already talked to them,” I said, my voice cold. “Mr. Sterling is the one who funded my new startup yesterday. He didn’t pull his account because of Vanessa’s insult—he pulled it because I told him I was leaving. I’m not saving your company, Dad. I’m buying it. At a 70% discount. Vanessa can stay on as a ‘modern face’ for the reception desk, but the ‘free’ labor is over.”
I hung up before he could respond. They had handed my sister the crown, but they forgot that I was the one who built the kingdom. Now, I was coming back for the keys, and this time, the price would be much higher than a simple thank you.
