Ingredients:
For the Caramelized Onions:
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp sugar (optional, for extra sweetness)
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar (optional, for deeper flavor)
For the Steak:
- 1 lb ribeye steak (or sirloin), thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp olive oil
For the Sandwich:
- 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls
- 4 slices provolone cheese (or cheese of choice: Swiss, cheddar, mozzarella)
- 1 tbsp butter (for toasting rolls)
Instructions:
Caramelize the Onions:
- Heat butter and olive oil in a pan over medium-low heat.
- Add sliced onions, salt, and pepper. Stir occasionally for about 25-30 minutes until deep golden brown.
- If using sugar and balsamic vinegar, add in the last 5 minutes. Set aside.
Prepare the Steak:
- Toss the thinly sliced steak with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
- Heat olive oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Sear the steak for 2-3 minutes until browned but still tender.
Assemble the Sandwich:
- Butter the inside of the hoagie rolls and toast them in a pan until golden.
- Pile the cooked steak onto the rolls, top with caramelized onions, and place cheese on top.
- If you want extra meltiness, place the sandwich under the broiler for 1-2 minutes until the cheese is bubbly.
Serve & Enjoy!
