Caramelized Onion and Cheese Steak Sandwich

Ingredients:

For the Caramelized Onions:

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional, for extra sweetness)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar (optional, for deeper flavor)

For the Steak:

  • 1 lb ribeye steak (or sirloin), thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

For the Sandwich:

  • 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls
  • 4 slices provolone cheese (or cheese of choice: Swiss, cheddar, mozzarella)
  • 1 tbsp butter (for toasting rolls)

Instructions:

  1. Caramelize the Onions:

    • Heat butter and olive oil in a pan over medium-low heat.
    • Add sliced onions, salt, and pepper. Stir occasionally for about 25-30 minutes until deep golden brown.
    • If using sugar and balsamic vinegar, add in the last 5 minutes. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the Steak:

    • Toss the thinly sliced steak with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Heat olive oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Sear the steak for 2-3 minutes until browned but still tender.
  3. Assemble the Sandwich:

    • Butter the inside of the hoagie rolls and toast them in a pan until golden.
    • Pile the cooked steak onto the rolls, top with caramelized onions, and place cheese on top.
    • If you want extra meltiness, place the sandwich under the broiler for 1-2 minutes until the cheese is bubbly.
  4. Serve & Enjoy!

    • Optionally, add mayo, Dijon mustard, or a garlic aioli for extra flavor.
    • Serve with fries, chips, or a side salad.
