Amish Poor Man’s Steak is a comforting, budget-friendly recipe from Amish country, made with ground beef patties, shaped into steaks and smothered in a savory gravy. Here’s how to make it:
Ingredients
1 lb ground beef
1 cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)
1 cup milk
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
Salt and pepper to taste
1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup (or make your own)
1 cup beef broth (or water)
Optional: garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce for extra flavor
Instructions
1. Make the Steaks:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, salt, and pepper. Mix until well blended.
Form the mixture into oval or rectangular patties (about 4-6 patties).
Place the patties on a baking sheet, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least an hour to help them hold together.
2. Sear the Steaks:
Preheat a skillet over medium heat with a bit of oil.
Sear the patties for about 2-3 minutes per side until they’re browned but not fully cooked through. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
3. Make the Gravy:
In the same skillet, add the cream of mushroom soup and beef broth. Stir well to combine and let it simmer for a few minutes.
(Optional) Add garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, or other seasonings to taste.
4. Bake:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Place the seared patties in a baking dish and pour the gravy over them.
Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the patties are fully cooked and the gravy is bubbly.
5. Serve:
Serve the Poor Man’s Steaks with mashed potatoes, noodles, or your favorite veggies, spooning extra gravy over the top.
Enjoy this hearty, simple Amish meal!
